Bruñal

ORIGIN AND HISTORY

Bruñal is a native red grape variety that is extremely rare in western Castilla y León, mainly linked to the Arribes del Duero region. For centuries it remained almost forgotten, cultivated in small family plots, until in recent decades it has been rediscovered and valued for its unique genetics and enormous winemaking potential.

At Javier Sanz Viticultor, we have been committed to this rarity from the very beginning, convinced that its untamed character and its connection to the region’s ancestral viticulture deserve a place of their own. Our Bruñal vineyard, planted on poor, well-drained soils, is a tribute to the past and a promise of a future for this one-of-a-kind grape.

A UNIQUE CLONE

Bruñal is not just another red variety. Its vegetative cycle is short, its yields are very low, and its cultivation requires artisanal viticulture. But it is precisely this difficulty that makes it so special. With small berries, thick skins and compact clusters, its phenolic concentration is remarkable and its aromatic profile is deeply original.

The result is wines of great intensity, low production and an overwhelming personality, capable of surprising with both structure and elegance in equal measure.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BRUÑAL GRAPE

The Bruñal grape stands out for its fast ripening and strong resistance to disease, making it a valuable option in sustainable agriculture. Its small, dark berries offer a dense pulp rich in anthocyanins and fine tannins.

WHAT DOES A BRUÑAL WINE TASTE LIKE?

Bruñal wines are deep, vibrant and expressive. On the nose, they reveal a complex range of red and black fruits (blackberry, wild blackberry), sweet spices (clove, cinnamon) and balsamic touches, with mineral notes and hints of scrubland. On the palate, they are enveloping, with firm yet polished tannins, lively acidity, and a long, elegant and persistent finish.

Its rarity and complexity make it an ideal wine for special occasions, with excellent ageing potential. It pairs perfectly with game dishes, red meats, traditional stews or aged cheeses.
