Godello

ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The Godello is a native white grape variety from the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, especially rooted in Galicia and El Bierzo, where it has made a strong comeback after decades of near disappearance. For years it was replaced by more productive varieties, but today it is recognized as one of Spain’s great white grapes, capable of combining structure, freshness, and longevity like few others.

At Javier Sanz Viticultor winery, we have chosen to grow Godello outside its traditional region, convinced that our continental climate, poor soils, and altitude could offer a new and surprising expression of this variety: more vertical, mineral, and precise. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GODELLO GRAPE

With small, compact clusters, thin skin, and early ripening, Godello requires a very precise harvest: if picked too early, it can be overly tense; if delayed, it loses definition. In our vineyard, thanks to the wide temperature range and optimal orientation, we achieve a slow and balanced ripening, with a highly defined aromatic profile and a natural acidity that is perfect for producing wines with ageing potential.

WHAT DOES A GODELLO WINE TASTE LIKE?

Godello wine is fresh, deep, and elegant. On the nose, aromas of yellow apple, ripe pear, citrus peel, white flowers, and mineral notes come through. On the palate it is broad yet taut, with a creamy texture and an acidity that brings energy and length. In some cases it may show hints of almond or dried hay, and if aged on the lees, it gains volume and complexity without losing definition.

It is a versatile, serious, food-friendly wine, pairing well with oily fish, dishes with delicate sauces, seafood rice dishes, mushrooms, white meats, and soft cheeses. But it can also be enjoyed on its own, to appreciate its elegance in its purest form.
