Grossa de Moldavia
ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The Grossa de Moldavia is a table grape variety originating from Eastern Europe, especially cultivated in Romania and Moldova, where it has traditionally been valued for its large berry size, natural sweetness, and resilience. Although its primary use has been as a fresh eating grape, its versatility and expression in suitable climates have also sparked interest in experimental winemaking applications.
At Javier Sanz Viticultor, we decided to go beyond the classic role of this grape. Thanks to our unique climatic conditions and a different vinicultural approach, we have explored its potential as a winemaking variety, seeking a new interpretation of this exuberant and unconventional grape in the world of wine.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GROSSA DE MOLDAVIA GRAPE
With medium ripening and high vigor, Grossa de Moldavia requires well-drained soils, generous sun exposure, and controlled yields to reach its best expression. Its firm skin gives it good health in the field, and its natural sugar content makes it suitable for both dry and off-dry wine styles.
In our vineyard, we opt for an early harvest, slow fermentations, and delicate work with the lees, seeking wines that balance its generous fruit with a fresh, clean palate.
WHAT DOES A GROSSA DE MOLDAVIA WINE TASTE LIKE?
Our sweet Grossa de Moldavia wine is seductive, aromatic, and balanced. On the nose it unfolds notes of fresh grapes, ripe melon, light honey, white flowers, quince, and a subtle tropical touch. On the palate it is indulgent but never cloying, with a refreshing acidity that cleanses the palate, a smooth texture, and a long finish with fruity echoes.
Perfect for accompanying foie gras, blue cheeses, fruit-based desserts, puff pastries, or as a contemplative wine served very cold. It is also an excellent choice for surprising with a sweet, original, and elegant aperitif.
