Viognier

ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The Viognier is a white grape variety originally from the Rhône Valley, in southeastern France. For centuries it was limited to just a few hectares in areas such as Condrieu or Château-Grillet, and it was on the verge of disappearing in the 20th century. Today, however, it is recognized as a grape of great personality, capable of producing intensely aromatic wines, with volume on the palate and an unmistakable character.

At Javier Sanz Viticultor, we decided to cultivate Viognier as part of our search for varieties with their own identity and the ability to adapt to a continental climate. Here, among poor soils, constant breezes, and strong thermal contrasts, Viognier finds a new expression: fresher, more restrained, and more vertical, without losing its varietal character.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VIOGNIER GRAPE

With small clusters, thin skin, and juicy pulp, Viognier requires well-drained soils and good sun exposure. In overly warm climates it can produce heavy wines; in cooler areas like ours, it expresses itself with greater balance, preserving its characteristic perfume but with more definition.

Its aromas develop already in the vineyard, and its richness in glycerol provides a smooth, creamy texture that makes it very appealing on the palate.

WHAT DOES A VIOGNIER WINE TASTE LIKE?

Viognier wine is seductive and precise. On the nose it offers intense notes of apricot, orange blossom, white peach, citrus peel, and hints of honey and fresh almond. On the palate it is enveloping, with medium-to-full body, a creamy texture, and an acidity that supports the whole, leaving a long, floral, and slightly spicy finish.

It is a wine that invites pause and refined pairing: ideal with Thai cuisine, seafood in aromatic sauces, washed-rind cheeses, foie gras, poultry, or even as a special glass to enjoy on its own.
