Its name is phylloxera and its story explains why today almost all the world’s vines are grafted onto American rootstock… and why preserving pre-phylloxera vines such as those at Finca Saltamontes, at Javier Sanz Viticultor, is such an exceptional feat.

In this article, we explain, in simple terms, what phylloxera is, how it arrived in Europe, what problems it caused, how its spread was halted, and what it means today to have ungrafted vineyards, as was the case before American grafts existed.

What is grapevine phylloxera?

Phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae) is a tiny insect, similar to an aphid, native to North America. It feeds on the sap of the vine and attacks in two ways:

On the leaves, forming small galls.

Above all, on the roots, where it causes wounds that eventually rot the plant and lead to its death.

American vines had developed a certain resistance to this insect. But the European vine, Vitis vinifera (the one used for our traditional varieties, such as Verdejo, Tempranillo, Garnacha, etc.), had no defences.

The combination was lethal: a new insect plus defenceless roots led to entire vineyards dying within a few years.

How phylloxera arrived in Europe

Until the mid-19th century, phylloxera lived undisturbed in the vineyards of the United States. The problem began when, with the transport revolution and the scientific curiosity of the time, American vines began to be imported into Europe to experiment with new varieties and seek solutions to other diseases, such as powdery mildew.

Phylloxera travelled on these plants, without anyone realising it.

It is believed that the pest arrived in Europe around 1860 and was first identified in France in 1863, in the Languedoc region.

From there, it spread to virtually all French wine-growing regions, causing the so-called Great French Wine Blight, which devastated more than 40% of the vineyards in just a few decades.

Phylloxera reached Spain somewhat later, with the first documented outbreak in Málaga in 1878, and from there it spread to the rest of the peninsula.

In just a few decades, Europe went from having a thriving wine industry to watching its vines wither away one after another, without anyone really knowing why.

What problems did phylloxera cause: a historic crisis

The arrival of phylloxera was much more than an agricultural problem: it was an economic, social and cultural crisis.

Millions of vines died in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy and the rest of Europe.

Local varieties and historic vineyards were lost.

Thousands of wine-growing families were ruined and had to emigrate or switch to other crops.

The price of wine skyrocketed and many countries began importing wine from elsewhere to meet demand.

For years, no one knew how to stop the pest. All sorts of solutions were tried: injecting chemicals into the soil, flooding the vineyards, planting in cooler areas… nothing worked across the board.

Until the idea arrived that would change wine forever.

How phylloxera was prevented from destroying European wine

The solution came from a simple line of reasoning: if American vines survive phylloxera and European ones do not, what if we use American roots with European varieties?

This marked the birth of modern grafting:

An American vine, resistant to phylloxera, is planted in the ground.

A European variety of Vitis vinifera, such as Verdejo, Tempranillo, Garnacha, etc., is grafted onto that rootstock.

Phylloxera is still there, but it no longer kills the plant because the American roots withstand it much better. The above-ground part of the vine — the part that produces the grapes — remains European, so the style of the wines is preserved.

Since the late 19th century, virtually all European vineyards have been replanted with vines grafted onto American rootstocks. In other words, the wine we drink today in most parts of the world comes from European vines on American rootstock.

The few places that were spared (and why): vineyards on sandy soil and other exceptions

Phylloxera does not thrive equally in all soils. There are very specific cases where the insect has been unable to develop:

Areas with very sandy or stony soils, where the spread of phylloxera is almost impossible.

Isolated regions or those with natural barriers (islands, desert areas).

In these places, European vines were able to remain planted ungrafted, that is, on their own roots, as was done before anyone had heard of American rootstocks.

Among these extremely rare exceptions are the pre-phylloxera vineyards that are still preserved in Spain, some of them in Castile and León… and this is where our vineyards in La Seca come into play.

Pre-phylloxera vineyards: what exactly are they?

We refer to pre-phylloxera vineyards as those that:

Were planted before the arrival of phylloxera in the area.

Have survived without being grubbed up.

Are ungrafted, not grafted onto American rootstock.

They are a true rarity:

Due to their age (they easily exceed 100 years).

Due to their structure (very deep roots, low yields, enormous concentration).

Due to their historical value: they represent the way vines were planted before the great plague.

In the Rueda D.O., there are very few examples of pre-phylloxera vineyards. Among them are the century-old vines that Bodega Javier Sanz Viticultor preserves in La Seca as a central part of its philosophy: vineyards over 150 years old and almost extinct native varieties.

Our pre-phylloxera vines in La Seca: European roots, pebbly soil

At Javier Sanz Viticultor, the Finca Saltamontes is one of those vineyards that are almost impossible to find today:

It is located in La Seca (Valladolid), right in the heart of the Rueda D.O.

These are Verdejo vines planted in the 19th century, over 150 years old.

They are ungrafted, growing on their own European roots, thanks to very sandy, pebbly soil that halted the advance of phylloxera.

These vines are the direct heirs to the method of vine planting used before Europe turned to American rootstocks. In other words:

They grow as the vines known to the Romans, the medieval kingdoms or the Catholic Monarchs grew: European vine, European roots, European soil.

The difference is that, in our case, we are talking about a vineyard planted over a century and a half ago, not two thousand years ago; but the way the plant lives, ungrafted, is the same.

What does having pre-phylloxera vines mean for the wine?

Having pre-phylloxera vines is not just a historical curiosity; it has direct consequences for the character of the wines.

Deeper roots, greater balance. After more than 100 years, the roots have explored metres and metres of soil in search of water and nutrients. This gives them:

greater resistance to drought and extreme weather,

more consistent ripening,

well-integrated natural acidity.

Low yields, great concentration. A century-old vine produces very few bunches, but of high quality:

thicker skins,

greater aromatic intensity,

structure on the palate.

Whites that age surprisingly well. At Finca Saltamontes, this combination of old vines, pebbly soils and delicate work in the winery results in white wines that can evolve for many years in the bottle, gaining complexity, depth and nuances not found in a standard young white.

A unique and irreplaceable identity. As they do not rely on a standard rootstock, the interaction between root, soil and climate is different. The wine tells a very specific story of place and time: that of a European vineyard that has survived the trend of grubbing up and replanting.

How phylloxera is combated today (and why it still matters to talk about it)

Although we may feel that phylloxera is ‘a thing of the past’, the reality is that the insect still exists. What has happened is that we have learnt to live with it:

The standard practice is to always plant on resistant American rootstocks.

Controls are in place regarding which plant material enters each country, and there are strict plant health regulations.

Areas that remain phylloxera-free, such as certain islands or sandy soils, are closely monitored.

In this context, pre-phylloxera vineyards such as our vines at Finca Saltamontes are:

A living laboratory for better understanding how roots influence wine.

A genetic and cultural heritage of immense value.

A reminder that wine cannot be understood by looking only at the present: there are insects, decisions and roots that explain every glass.

Frequently asked questions about phylloxera and pre-phylloxera vineyards

Has phylloxera been ‘eradicated’? No. It still exists, but it is controlled by planting on resistant American rootstocks and carefully managing the movement of plants between countries.

Does a pre-phylloxera vineyard mean that the vines are Roman? Not literally. Our pre-phylloxera vines were planted in the 19th century, but they grow on their own European roots, just as vines did in Roman times or under the Catholic Monarchs: European vine, European rootstock, European soil, without American grafting.

Can you tell from the taste that a vineyard is pre-phylloxera? There is no such thing as a ‘phylloxera taste’ as such, but it is noticeable in:

Greater concentration and depth.

Structure and acidity that allow the wine to age very well.

A very distinct terroir character, especially when working with low yields and hand-harvesting.

Why aren’t there more vineyards like this if they’re so special? Because maintaining a pre-phylloxera vineyard involves:

Having soils where phylloxera does not thrive (which is not the norm).

Having resisted the temptation to grub up and replant in order to produce greater quantities.

Accepting very low yields and high costs… in exchange for truly unique wines.

A final toast: what phylloxera taught us

Phylloxera was a tragedy, but also a lesson:

it reminded us that wine depends on a fragile balance between plants, soils, insects and human decisions.

At Javier Sanz Viticultor, that history is part of our daily lives:

We preserve pre-phylloxera vines in La Seca, a true treasure trove of European roots.

We produce white wines capable of ageing with elegance from these century-old vines.

And we continue to research and care for nearly extinct native varieties, because the future of wine also lies in protecting its past.

The next time you see words such as “pre-phylloxera vines” or “Finca Saltamontes” on a label, you will know that behind that bottle there is not just a wine, but a story of roots, of resilience and of a family that has decided to continue cultivating the vine just as they did before phylloxera changed the wine map forever.

Phylloxera: the pest that changed wine forever (and why our pre-phylloxera vines are a rarity) In the world of wine, there is a distinct ‘before’ and ‘after’ marked by a tiny insect.
